Zoo Negara, the forgotten place? When was the last time you visited Zoo Negara? June is my hubby’s birthday month, so we took the opportunity to visit the Zoo Negara as its free entry for him. He just had to show his IC & fill up a form with his name, IC number and contact number at the ticketing counter. This offer is valid 30 days from the birthday date. For senior citizens above 60 years old, the entrance fee is only RM23. Adult Malaysian fee is RM45 while kids (3-12 years old) is RM18. The entrance fee includes a visit to Giant Panda Conservation Centre (GPCC).

We were excited to see the panda as we have yet to visit since the pandas arrived at Zoo Negara. Sheng Yi and Yi Yi are the offspring of Fu Wa and Feng Yi. The giant pandas were on loan to Malaysia in 2014 for 10 years. It was reported that there are four pandas now and both panda cubs will return to China soon. During our visit, we saw two adorable sleepy pandas.

While at the zoo, we were glad to see that the wild animals were in good shape, and many storks were making nests at the trees by the lake. I am glad we made the trip there, as it made me feel like a kid again. I'm excited to look at all the wild animals such as giraffes, elephants, hippocampus, Orang Utan, turtles, camels, deer, tigers, lions & many more.

The most interesting story we read on the internet is how the capybaras adopted a cat into their family. Capybaras are the world's biggest rodent species and you can see them idyllically munching on long leaves during feeding time. While the cat, named Oyen, is close by. The zoo is not sure when Oyen moved in with the capybara, but it is during the shutdown that they suddenly see Oyen at the capybaras enclosure. We heard some visitors calling out to Oyen. Obviously, they read about it on social media as it went viral.

Usually, the zoo does not encourage animals to interact with strays as it could be dangerous for them. Many cats and pets are abandoned near the Zoo Negara during the shutdown. As owners of the pets found it challenging to care for them during those difficult times. Nevertheless, the capybaras and Oyen, both animals are monitored closely. It’s reported that both animals seem to be getting along well, in good health, happily living together and have not shown any distress. This is indeed unexpected kinship. The presence of Oyen has made the Capybara enclosure one of the more popular ones in the zoo. Hopefully will attract more visitors in order to draws crowds to help sustain Zoo Negara.

Zoo Negara has done a good job in maintaining the zoo and taking good care of all animals since year 1963. Zoo Negara will celebrate its 60th anniversary in November 2023. Zoo Negara has planned few activities to attract more visitors. There are activities for school programmes such as school trips to Zoo Negara. With every 10 students, one (1) teacher will get free entrance. Then there is the Zoo Camp (Date: 7th & 8th October 2023). You can experience night walk, enrichment and join in the feeding activities. For more enquiries, kindly email your request to education@zoonegaramalaysia.my

Let’s visit Zoo Negara to experience nature at its best and understand the animal habitat, and how climate change and other threats affect the animals. Let’s support Zoo Negara as Zoos help to save endangered species by bringing those animals into a safer environment. In the Zoo, the animals are protected from poachers, starvation, habitat loss, and predators. By visiting the Zoo, the public is entertained by the animals and is educated about wildlife & their habitats, reports on any of the scientific research & the importance of species conservation. It’s the best place for stress release as we can appreciate the beauty and wonders of animals while wandering into the vast Zoo Negara grounds of serene greenery.

Lastly, don’t forget to drop by Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium which has more than 130 species of aquatic creatures big and small on display from both marine and freshwater. It’s located near the “Pintu Masuk B”. Then on the way out at main entrance, you can buy “Zoo Poo” compost for your plants for only RM5 a pack.

Zoo Negara is located in Ulu Klang, near Taman Melawati. It is located on a 110-acre piece of land and is only a short 5 kilometers from the city center.
