ZOO Negara has rejected claims that it failed to assist animals during a flash flood two days ago, saying all animals under its care remained safe despite water levels rising to 1.2 metres in several areas.
Zoo Negara deputy president Datuk Rosly Lana said the flooding was caused by the overflow of the Pandan and Kemensah rivers in Hulu Klang following prolonged heavy rain, with the rapid flow making it impossible for vehicles to reach several habitats.
“There was too much water flowing too quickly and no vehicle could get through.
“Even the tram could not enter as the water had inundated the reptile, hippo (hippopotamus) and savannah areas,” he said.
Rosly said the convergence of the two rivers caused floodwaters to rise rapidly across animal habitats and cut off routes used by visitors and staff.
He said certain species, including hippopotamuses, were not affected because the flooded areas were consistent with their natural behaviour.
“The hippo area is where they naturally like to immerse themselves, so there was no problem. All the other animals were safe. The enclosures were also cleaned two days ago.
“There was quite a thick layer of mud, but the situation was completely resolved within two hours,” he said.
Rosly said the zoo had managed the latest incident better than previous major floods, with no animal fatalities recorded.
He said cleaning and monitoring operations were continuing to ensure the safety and welfare of the animals and the comfort of visitors. - September 11, 2026
