PETALING JAYA: Zuraida Kamaruddin has been officially installed as president of Parti Bangsa Malaysia, a week after she was unanimously backed to take over from Larry Sng.
Party secretary-general Nor Hizwan Ahmad said PBM’s Supreme Council met last night and executed the necessary process to install Zuraida as the president.
“The Supreme Council and the party congratulate Zuraida Kamaruddin and hope she will lead the party to serve the people,” Hizwan said in a statement.
The Supreme Council also thanked Sng for his past contributions. Sng did not attend the meeting yesterday. It is believed he was in Parliament.
Last June, Sng announced Zuraida as PBM leader, which was unanimously adopted by members of the party’s political bureau and the Supreme Council.
However, last Sunday, following the party’s inaugural general assembly, Sng said he was shocked by PBM information chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid’s announcement that Zuraida was officially the party president.
The Julau MP had said there were certain procedures to follow before the party could have a new president, one of which was that the incumbent must resign or be sacked.
Despite his comments, Sng insisted that there was no conflict between him and Zuraida, and that he just wanted the transition carried out according to the “right procedures” to avoid PBM facing any problems with the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
The PBM founder member also said he had made it clear to Zuraida and the party’s top officials that he would not resign immediately as the party needed to consider the possibility that the general election (GE15) could be called very soon.
As such, any decision by him to resign abruptly could lead to problems for PBM in fielding candidates for the polls.
