Can capitalism still be reformed—or does Malaysia need an entirely different economic system?
In this episode of TheGoodCastShow, Vinodh Rajendran sits down with Arveent Kathirtchelvan, author of Red Tiger: Practical Socialism in Malaysia and Head of the Policy Research Bureau of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), to debate what a socialist Malaysia could actually look like.
Arveent argues that capitalism is not merely malfunctioning—the inequality, low wages and concentration of power we see today are built into the system itself. His proposed alternative is a distinctly Malaysian model of socialism shaped by our economy, multicultural society and dependence on international trade.

• Transform GLCs and GLICs into development-driven, not-for-profit institutions
• Reduce its dependence on foreign direct investment and global supply chains
• Strengthen domestic food production and economic self-sufficiency

• Democratise—not simply nationalise—major industries
• Increase minimum wages, corporate taxes and inheritance taxes
• Give workers and ordinary citizens greater influence over economic decisions

Vinodh challenges Arveent on the risks behind this vision. Who would invest and take entrepreneurial risks if profits were restricted? Could devolving economic power create disorder and bureaucracy? Would higher wages and taxes increase prices? What happens if foreign investors leave? Can a trading nation like Malaysia afford to turn inward—and how much short-term economic pain would Malaysians tolerate?
They also confront socialism’s historical association with authoritarianism, the role of race and religion in a socialist Malaysia, and whether countries such as Vietnam offer a realistic model for Malaysia to study.
