A tourist has been banned for three years from Mount Emei in the southwestern Sichuan province after a video showed him pushing a wild monkey on a precarious guardrail, sparking online backlash.
In the video, which first went viral on May 5, the man suddenly shoves the monkey while it was eating an orange on a high railing, appearing to nearly cause it to fall off the mountain. The man then laughs and runs away.
Authorities said the location was not a dangerous cliff edge as the video made it seem. The man, whose actions violated national wildlife protection laws and tourist conduct regulations, has since been identified, admitted wrongdoing, and apologized.
