Bamboo artist Cheng Li has been named a recipient of the Shanghai 2025 “Stories of Urban Civilization Contributors” award, in recognition of her longstanding efforts to support people with disabilities through traditional craft.

Since launching her intangible cultural heritage public welfare project in 2010, Cheng has helped participants break social isolation, learn bamboo weaving, and create sustainable sources of income.

For Cheng, the work is about more than craft. “It’s not charity, but an opportunity to live with dignity,”said Cheng.

Recently, she has focused on expanding the program through community collaborations and developing market-oriented designs to ensure its long-term sustainability.
