Mysterious Moeraki Boulders

The Moeraki Boulders are a fascinating natural attraction located along the coast of South Island, near the small town of Moeraki. These large, spherical stones are scattered across Koekohe Beach and are known for their almost perfectly round shapes and unique cracked surfaces. Formed over millions of years through natural geological processes, the boulders are composed mainly of calcite-cemented mudstone. According to Māori legend, they are the remains of eel baskets and gourds washed ashore from a great voyaging canoe. Visitors can walk along the beach to view the boulders up close, especially at low tide when more are exposed. The site offers excellent photography opportunities and a peaceful coastal setting, making it a popular stop for travellers exploring New Zealand’s Otago region. *Apps : Canva; Pix : Pexels. *Email : yayeh2851@gmail.com
