πŸ“ Protestors are gathering today in Putrajaya to demand the return of Malaysian elephants Dara, Amoi and Kelat that were flown from the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari (TZNS) to Osaka's Tennoji Zoo on 11 March.

β€’ The rally follows scrutiny over Tennoji Zoo's elephant care record. This includes the case of an Asian elephant, Hiroko, that lived alone for years and died in 2018, likely due to a untreated chronic foot-related disease.

β€’ Concerns were further raised after one of the Malaysian elephants, Kelat, was reported to have chipped his left tusk after arriving at Tennoji. His right tusk was trimmed to prevent imbalance.

β€’ Perak exco Sandrea Ng said the transfer of the three elephants was done under a sister zoo concept focusing on conservation and raising animal care standards. They remain the property of TZNS, and Tennoji bears a binding responsibility for their welfare including the provision of suitable habitats and regular veterinary care, she said.

β€’ Protestors are gathering in front of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability in Putrajaya at 11am, Friday (24 April). A petition to bring Dara, Amoi and Kelat back to Malaysia has garnered over 110,770 signatures.
