When Does Eczema Need Allergy Testing?

Eczema doesn’t always mean food allergy, and not every child with eczema needs allergy testing.

Testing without the right clinical context can sometimes create more confusion than clarity. A positive allergy test may show sensitisation, but that does not always mean a true allergy.

So when does testing help?

When there is a convincing history of a reaction to a specific food, or when eczema remains difficult to control despite appropriate skin treatment, a targeted allergy evaluation may be useful.

But for many children, the first step is still the same:

Repair the skin barrier. Control the inflammation. Treat the eczema properly.

Allergy testing should answer a clinical question, not simply search for a trigger.
