The Frenchman has returned to the UK from Chelsea's preseason tour of Japan for treatment on his knee injury.
The Blues remain hopeful Kante will be fit for their clash with Manchester United on August 12, says the London Evening Standard.
The injury was originally sustained at the end of last season.
The World Cup winner is set to line-up in his preferred defensive midfield position as Frank Lampard toys with a 4-2-3-1 system.
