TAWAU: The State Government is expected to approve the proposed construction of 1,000 units of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Apas, here.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said he, as the assemblyman for the area, with the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), has submitted the proposal to the Government.

Also present was Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Lo Su Fui.

A total of 75 Heads of Household (KIR) currently housed at the Tawau Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall received donations in the forms of kitchen equipment, raw materials and personal needs, as well as cash.

Nizam hoped that more PPR houses can be built in the State to reduce squatter settlements, including in Tawau, and also to address the risk of fires.

He hoped the donations given could somewhat ease the burden of the fire victims.

Nizam also expressed gratitude to all agencies and departments involved in assisting the firefighting operation and coordinating assistance to the affected people.

A total of 60 houses were razed, resulting in the displacement of 631 victims, including 77 non-citizens, in the 7.30am fire on Sunday.

The incident affected 253 children and babies, including 22 non-citizens, making them the largest victim group compared to incidents last year.

There are currently two PPRs in Apas, namely PPR Taman Sri Titingan (500 units) and PPR Taman Sri Apas (900 units).

Three more PPRs in the Tawau district are located in Taman Sri Balung (900 units), Taman Sri Semarak (500 units) and Taman Sri Bukit Tawau (400 units).
