1,000 silat participants set Asian record

Kota Kinabalu: A combination of 22 silat associations involving 1,000 martial artists was recognised by the Asia Book of Record (ABR).

The presentation of the certificate for most participants was completed by the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

Assistant Minister of Rural Development Datuk Seri Dr Ruddy Awah said that the recognition was for the feat held in Pitas and hosted by the district office last February.

“Tonight’s programme is a continuation of last February’s programme where we created an Asian record which was the most pencak silat practitioners performing.

Read more “Among the associations involved are the Pencak Lima Martial Arts Association from Kota Belud, the Pitas District Native Court Martial Arts Association, the Pekalongan Membakut Sports Martial Arts Club and the Sabah Contingent PDRM Martial Arts Association,” he said when met by the media at the event on Thursday.

Ruddy, who is also the ABR Creation Day Advisor, hopes that many more new records will be created on the world stage.

“This night is the culmination, the glory of pencak silat which has already been recognised by ABR, which is the night of the presentation of the Asian Record recognition certificate.

“After this, we will continue to try to raise the name of the State as well as the country by creating new records on the world stage,” he said.

Also present at the handover ceremony were the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Datuk Seri M. Yahya, the Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Ellron Angin and the Permanent Secretary of the Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports Datuk Mansur Asun.
