LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle 1,428 one-kilogram packets of subsidised cooking oil in a high-impact operation near Tanjung Batu waters early Saturday.
MMEA Lahad Datu Zone director, Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said the suspicious boat was spotted around 6 am, just 0.2 nautical miles from shore. The suspect fled toward land and jumped into the sea to escape.
A total of 84 boxes of cooking oil were found hidden in black plastic bags. The seized goods and boat, worth an estimated RM10,000, were taken to the FELDA Sahabat Maritime Post. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
