
Kota Kinabalu: The installation of smart closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the city could help to improve the security, said Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah.
He said DBKK recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for the project.
Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});“This collaboration is crucial as DBKK plans to install more CCTV cameras across Kota Kinabalu, including beaches and strategic locations. This will instil confidence among visitors, particularly foreign tourists, in the city’s safety.
“The scope of the project will depend on the funds allocated by MCMC,” he told the media during a media briefing held as part of the city’s 25th Silver Jubilee celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.

Read more The first phase of the project, expected to begin early this year, will see the installation of 1,500 CCTV cameras primarily focused on high-risk areas such as commercial zones, residential neighbourhoods, main roads and beaches.
The mayor said that the smart CCTV system, equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), will help detect unusual activity, such as suspicious movements or sounds, and immediately alert the Command Centre.

“These thefts not only cause power outages but also pose risks to public safety. The new system will significantly aid in identifying culprits and preventing such incidents,” he said.

“The City Hall will continue working closely with other enforcement agencies, including the police and other government bodies, to utilise the data provided by the smart CCTV system for surveillance and enforcement purposes,” he said.
A total of 28 special events have been planned to mark the city’s Silver Jubilee.
The celebrations, which will feature various activities aimed at uniting the city’s community throughout the year, will begin on Feb 2.
Sabin said the celebrations represent a significant milestone in Kota Kinabalu’s history and serve as an effort to build a brighter future.
“This event is graced with a variety of exciting programmes carefully designed to unite the community and celebrate the achievements of our city over the past 25 years.
Among the events are KK Clean-Up Day and the Kampungku Bersih Challenge.
“These initiatives have received overwhelming support from the community, showcasing a spirit of unity and shared responsibility for cleanliness and sustainability,” he said.
Among the key events, he said, are the Silver Jubilee 25th Anniversary Launch Ceremony and the DBKK Appreciation Event, aimed at recognising contributions from various parties toward the city’s progress and well-being.
“As another historic step, we will also witness, for the first time, a Flag-Raising Ceremony involving the presence of the Governor of Sabah, an honour that adds great significance to this celebration.
“Additionally, a Food Fiesta will be held, along with the 4th International Literary and Poetry Essay Festival, highlighting the beauty of creative arts as an essential element of the city’s identity,” he added.
Furthermore, Sabin announced that the Kota Kinabalu International Mayors Dialogue 2025 will also be organised for the first time, elevating Kota Kinabalu’s global reputation and strengthening its position as an international city.
“To showcase our love for the environment and landscape art, the Kota Kinabalu Landscape Festival (KKLF) will be one of the highlights, reflecting the beauty and efforts to sustain the city’s environment,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the media for their crucial role as conveyors of information and the voice of the community, which has helped strengthen the relationship between DBKK and the local community.
