
PETALING JAYA: A teenager died while four people suffered mild to severe burns, after the bus they were travelling in caught fire at KM198 (northbound) of the North-South Expressway (NSE).
The 3.50am incident involved a bus believed to be carrying 28 passengers from Singapore and heading to Kuala Lumpur, Berita Harian reported.
Alor Gajah district police chief Arshad Abu said they received a call at 4am about an accident involving a bus and a motorcycle, and a team headed out to the scene.
“A motorcyle had fallen on its own on the extreme left lane of the highway and the rider was able to get up and go to safety on the side of the highway when the bus crashed into the stranded motorcycle.

Read more “The bus dragged the motorcycle for a short distance before it caught fire,” he said in a statement, adding that five passengers were trapped when the flames engulfed the bus.
According to Arshad, a 17-year-old girl who suffered severe burns was sent to the Alor Gajah Hospital after being rescued but died while being treated for her injuries.
“Of the four injured passengers, aged 19 to 69, two are being treated for severe burns while the other two had light injuries,” he said.
He added that the other 23 passengers, the driver and his assistant, did not suffer any injuries.
Meanwhile, Ayer Keroh fire and rescue station operations commander Zahrul Azha Mokhtar said 21 personnel were dispatched to the location after getting an emergency call at around 3.55am, and helped put out the fire and rescue the injured passengers.
