Sleeping with the peaks in view, breathing in the crisp mountain air and staying free of charge high in the mountains: it is hard to imagine a more spectacular setting. In the Italian Alps, this rare experience combines fully covered accommodation with a life-size scientific project. A singular escape, far removed from an ordinary holiday.

Designed by the Eurac research centre, this original programme offers the chance to spend a month at the Nino Corsi refuge, nestled in Stelvio National Park in northern Italy.

Selected participants live at altitude while continuing their usual activities. An unusual opportunity that turns a simple mountain stay into a genuine scientific experience.

A month surrounded by peaks

Perched at around 2,300 metres above sea level, the Nino Corsi refuge sits at the heart of a spectacular Alpine landscape. Pine forests, open valleys, high-altitude lakes and still snow-capped summits… daily life for volunteers promises to be nothing short of extraordinary.

In such a setting, the pace of life naturally shifts. Days begin in the silence of the mountains, far from the bustle of the city. The surrounding trails invite long walks, while the pure air and crisp light heighten this feeling of complete disconnection.

A holiday… but not quite

Behind the sense of escape lies a clear objective: to study the effects of moderate altitude on the human body. Researchers will monitor several factors, including sleep, physical activity, diet and metabolism.

Volunteers are therefore expected to maintain an active routine, continuing to work remotely or pursue their studies from a distance. The idea is to understand the impact of a mountain environment without disrupting everyday habits. Accommodation and meals are fully covered, along with an allowance of around €400.

Already fully booked for this session

Twelve participants have already been selected for this session, which is open to healthy adults meeting a number of specific criteria. Unfortunately, the success of the initiative has led applications to close for this edition.

For mountain lovers tempted by the adventure, it will now be a matter of waiting until the next session. An opportunity worth keeping a close eye on next year.
