The Gurugram police have arrested 13 Bangladeshi nationals who were residing illegally in the city during a special verification drive launched to identify and deport undocumented foreign nationals, officials said on Sunday. The latest action forms part of a widening national crackdown on illegal immigration that has intensified across major Indian cities since the Pahalgam terror attack last year.

The operation was carried out by a Crime Branch team from Sector 39 under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Hitesh Yadav. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of illegal immigrants at construction sites and slum settlements across Gurugram, police teams conducted verification checks at multiple locations. During the drive, officers examined the identity and citizenship status of suspected individuals. All 13 persons were found to be residing in the city without valid documents, and Bangladeshi citizenship papers were recovered from their possession.

The police interrogation revealed that the arrested individuals had entered India illegally through the Kaliaganj border with the assistance of Bangladeshi agents. After crossing into the country, they travelled to Gurugram and blended into the city’s construction workforce. They were living in slum clusters and working as labourers to avoid detection. The police said all 13 individuals would be deported after the completion of the due legal process.

This is not the first such action by the Gurugram police. In July 2025, eight illegal Bangladeshi nationals were detained and deported from the city. At the time, the police noted that several migrants had obtained Aadhaar cards and other Indian identity documents using rented residential addresses. In a separate operation, 23 Bangladeshi nationals, including 13 minors, were found working at a brick kiln in Nuh district and were subsequently arrested. Across the NCR, Delhi Police has processed more than 900 illegal Bangladeshi nationals for deportation since early 2025, following directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs to strengthen identification drives in major economic centres.

The ongoing crackdown is part of a broader citywide verification campaign covering slum settlements, unauthorised colonies, rented accommodation, industrial areas, hotels and commercial establishments. The Gurugram police has also urged Resident Welfare Associations and citizens to cooperate with the exercise and ensure police verification of tenants, domestic helpers and employees. The police clarified that the drive is not intended to harass legitimate residents or foreign nationals residing legally in the country. Officials warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found spreading false or misleading information about the campaign.
