The Panchkula police have launched a drive to free the city of crime and encroachments.

Under the campaign, identities of individuals living illegally in slums and temporary shelters on the roadside in parts of the city are being thoroughly verified.

Following the verification, encroachments are being completely cleared.

The police said a major operation was carried out near Yavanika Park and Parade Ground in the Sector 5 police station area on Tuesday. With the cooperation of the Haryana Shehari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), illegally constructed slums were demolished using bulldozers.

A heavy police contingent was deployed to maintain law and order during the anti-encroachment campaign. Senior officials said the bulldozer action would continue unabated to remove encroachments. Issuing a warning, the police said tackling those disturbing law and order would be a priority.
