TAWAU: Fourteen male teenagers aged between 12 and 14 have been detained to assist investigations into an alleged armed riot involving a group of students at Ambar Park Playground, Jalan Kuhara, here at about 6pm on Tuesday.
Tawau district police chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said preliminary investigations found the incident began following a misunderstanding between two students before other male teenagers became involved.
He said police from the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) conducted investigations and efforts to trace those involved on Wednesday, while viral video clips of the fight helped identify the individuals and their alleged roles.
Police also seized an iPhone 13 and a black bicycle believed to be linked to the investigation, while one foreign national who failed to produce valid travel documents would be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Rosdi said investigations were ongoing to determine the involvement and roles of those detained, with action taken under Section 148 of the Penal Code, while police were obtaining the original video recording, recording witness and suspect statements, obtaining the victim’s medical report and working with the school and Tawau District Education Office.
