TAWAU: Police detained two lorry drivers after a 34-second dashcam recording of their alleged dangerous driving along Jalan Apas between Semporna and Tawau went viral on social media.
District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh confirmed that police received a report about the recording, which showed two Isuzu lorries allegedly being driven dangerously, leading police to investigate the incident.
He said the incident was believed to have occurred at about 3.52 pm on Aug 29, when one of the lorries was suspected to be travelling from Semporna towards Tawau.
“Initial investigations also found the presence of another separate Isuzu lorry, which was suspected of dangerously overtaking several vehicles and nearly hitting a motorcycle,” he said here on Friday.
Rosdi said the video recording began circulating on social media on Sept 17, and police received a report at 9.58 pm the same day, leading to the arrests that followed.
“Following the report, police traced the whereabouts of both lorry drivers before arresting them about an hour later to assist investigations,” he said. He said urine tests conducted on both drivers found them to be negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Rosdi said police were also still tracing the owner of the Facebook account that uploaded the recording of the two lorries to assist with the investigation, as the post had drawn public attention.
He said police took reckless and dangerous driving seriously, particularly involving heavy vehicles, as such actions could endanger other road users.
“Obey traffic regulations when driving and practise responsible driving. Do not carry out any action that could endanger other road users. We also urge anyone who witnessed the incident to assist the investigation by providing information to the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division investigating officer, Sergeant Razlan Razan, at 019-823 4484,” he said.
The recording, which allegedly showed the two lorry drivers driving dangerously, was previously circulated in a Facebook group and sparked concern among the public.
