The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has intensified its investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob over allegations of corruption and money laundering. The agency has recorded statements from 36 individuals, with more witnesses expected to be called soon.

According to sources, among those questioned so far are 32 witnesses and four of Ismail Sabri’s former officers who were previously detained. Investigators are preparing to summon 23 additional witnesses, while four individuals are currently providing their statements.

Ismail Sabri was initially scheduled to appear before the MACC last Friday for questioning, but he did not attend, citing health concerns.

The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA). As part of the probe, the MACC has already seized approximately RM170 million in cash, held in multiple international currencies. The confiscated funds include Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc, and Yuan, indicating extensive financial transactions across various regions.

Additionally, authorities seized 16 kilograms of gold bullion, estimated to be worth around RM7 million. The discovery of these assets has intensified suspicions of large-scale financial irregularities.

Prior to the latest developments, Ismail Sabri had submitted his asset declaration on February 10, followed by a statement recorded on February 19.

The ongoing probe has attracted significant public and political attention, as questions arise regarding financial mismanagement during Ismail Sabri’s tenure. The MACC is expected to continue gathering evidence and interviewing key individuals linked to the case in the coming weeks.

As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on Ismail Sabri and whether further legal action will be taken against him. The outcome of the probe could have significant implications for Malaysia’s political landscape, as anti-corruption efforts remain a major focus for both the government and the public.
