According to NST, this incident took place at 4.40pm in the male dormitory of a religious school in Jeli, Kelantan.

Jeli district police chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun revealed that the victims, aged 15 and 16, were rushed to Jeli Hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigations found that the students had modified fireworks by inserting sulphur into a bottle along with small stones, turning it into an improvised explosive device.

As a result, they suffered injuries and burns on various parts of their bodies. One of them, aged 16, lost a finger on his left hand,” Kamarulzaman said in a statement.

The victims are currently receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency department.

Warning to parents and past incidents

Kamarulzaman urged parents to stay vigilant and monitor their children’s activities, especially during festive seasons, to prevent similar tragedies.

This marks the second such incident in Kelantan this year. On 17 March, a 14-year-old boy from Labok, Machang, nearly lost a finger when a ‘mercun bola’ (ball-shaped firework) exploded in his hand before he could throw it.
