Last Tuesday (Oct 13), a total of three youths were electrocuted and suffered burns to their body after a Nine Emperor God procession in Kedah went horribly wrong.
Unfortunately, one of the victims has passed away at 2am today, reported Sin Chew Daily.
Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) Councilor Ch’ng Boon Chye confirmed the news, saying that 16-year-old Xu Zhikang (transliteration) breathed his last after being hospitalised for a week.
He added that according to Xu’s father, the teen, who suffered burns to 80% of his body, underwent a skin grafting operation which lasted approximately eight to nine hours on Oct 19.
However, the operation proved to be too much for Xu’s body to handle as his condition deteriorated due to a weakened immune system, eventually leading to his demise.
The wake will be held at Xu’s family home in Simpang Empat for three days.
What happened
On the day of the incident, Xu and two others were part of the flag performance team during the procession held in conjunction with the Nine Emperor God Festival in Mergong, Kedah.
Along the way, strong winds caused one of the flag poles to come in contact with the power line, resulting in Xu and the two other victims being electrocuted.
A hole was also left in the road due to the high voltage of the electric shock.
Police revealed that the other two victims, both aged 17, suffered burns to 20% and 40% of their bodies respectively.
However, their current condition remains unknown.
