The teenage driver who was involved in the horrific crash which took the lives of four family members back in June has pleaded not guilty.
The accused, Goh Yin Zun, made the plea before magistrate Nurasidah A Rahman at the Kluang Magistrate’s Court today, reported Sin Chew Daily.
Goh was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving recklessly and dangerously along Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam on June 1.
If convicted, he faces a maximum jail sentence of five years, a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least two years upon conviction.
Released on RM10,000 bail
During proceedings, the Deputy Public Prosecutor requested that the court impose bail of RM20,000 with one surety.
However, Goh’s lawyers asked for the bail amount to be reduced to between RM5,000 and RM10,000, adding that Goh was pursuing a diploma in business management in Singapore since July 2.
“After the incident, the accused was released on police bail and had been reporting to the police station regularly. He also voluntarily appeared in court today,” they added.
Goh was released released on RM10,000 bail with one surety and ordered to report himself to the nearest police station once a month.
The case was fixed for mention and submission of documents on Nov 20.
Summary
On June 1, Goh was racing with his elder brother while behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz A250 before both of them crashed into several vehicles.
As a result of the collision, an entire family of four who were travelling inside a Toyota Vios perished. Two others were left injured as well.
Goh’s elder brother later succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital for treatment. As for Goh, he was remanded by police for two days to assist investigations.
Previously, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar had ordered police to classify investigations into the case as murder.
However, he said a final decision on the charges would only be determined after the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AG-C) thoroughly examined the results of the police probe.
