PUTRAJAYA – Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman remains a free man after the Federal Court today dismissed the prosecution's appeal against the Court of Appeal's ruling acquitting and discharging the Muar MP of four counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to funds belonging to Bersatu's youth wing, Armada.
In a 2-1 majority decision, Federal Court judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, ruled that the 34-year-old former Bersatu vice-president should be acquitted and discharged.
However, Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, who chaired the three-member panel, was the sole dissenting judge, finding the former youth and sports minister guilty.
The majority decision saw the prosecution's final appeal dismissed, while clearing the former Muda president from the conviction and sentence of seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November 2023.
The decision brought an end to Syed Saddiq's lengthy legal battle that had continued for several years, while significantly altering the course of his personal life and political future.
This includes his upcoming marriage with his fiancée, singer Bella Astillah.
The decision was followed by an applause from his family members and supporters in the courtroom.
