It’s that time of the year again where we head over to Taipei, Taiwan to attend the Smart City Summit & Net Zero Expo. We’re keeping tabs on what’s the progress and see what’s new as well, and we have to say – there are quite a lot of new things being shown this time.

2026 Smart City Summit & Expo Kicks Off: A Glimpse into Taipei’s AI and Net Zero Future

Every year we attend the expo, the number of participants and government ministries keeps growing. The expo is now embarking on a massive collaborative effort across seven government ministries. The event serves as the primary stage for Taiwan’s “New Ten AI Projects” and its comprehensive roadmap toward carbon neutrality by 2050, showcasing how integrated green tech and artificial intelligence will reshape urban life.

The “New Ten” AI Revolution

Under the theme “Economy Next,” the Ministry of Economic Affairs is highlighting a shift from basic software to high-end hardware and practical deployment. Key innovations on display include silicon photonics, quantum computing, and AI-driven robotics designed for smart manufacturing. On the service side, the expo features generative AI platforms capable of real-time multilingual interpretation and automated medical record-keeping, signaling a major boost to Taiwan’s global tech standing.

Greening the Concrete Jungle

Sustainability has moved from a goal to a mandate. The National Development Council (NDC) and the Ministry of the Interior are presenting a vision for “Resilient Territories,” focusing on zero-carbon buildings that utilize PV (photovoltaic, a.k.a. solar panels) green energy to act as natural carbon sinks. This is part of a massive $15 trillion infrastructure strategy aimed at creating 500,000 high-paying jobs by 2040 through international-level labs and smart urban planning.

Mobility, Tourism, and Environmental Governance

The future of transportation and city maintenance is becoming increasingly autonomous and aiming towards renewably powered:

  • Hydrogen Power: The MOTC is debuting hydrogen-powered buses as a cornerstone of transport electrification.
  • Smart Tourism: The Tourism Pavilion features immersive 3D cycling and AI-driven experiences like “Five Elements” fortune-telling.
  • Environmental Robotics: To protect frontline workers, the event showcased robotic dogs and unmanned vessels for monitoring hazardous environments, alongside “Cool Maps” that use AI to help citizens navigate urban heat islands.

The summit reinforces Taiwan’s transition into a “Smart Technology Island,” proving that these innovations—ranging from quantum chips to robotic park patrols—are no longer just concepts, but active blueprints for the near future.
