The intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainability took center stage today as Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao officially opened the Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) and the Net Zero City Expo at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. Solidifying Taiwan’s status as a global hub for urban innovation, this year’s event has drawn representatives from 174 cities across 53 countries, all seeking blueprints for the cities of tomorrow.

Deployable AI

While many tech summits focus on speculative concepts, the 2026 SCSE is shifting the narrative toward functional, working solutions. Samson Hu, Co-CEO of ASUS and Chairman of the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance, emphasized that the summit is now a delivery platform for technology that can be integrated immediately into:

  • Public Safety: Real-time monitoring and emergency response.
  • Healthcare: AI-assisted diagnostics and smart records.
  • Transportation: Autonomous transit and AI-managed traffic flow.

The Convergence of AI and Sovereignty

A core theme this year is the rise of “Sovereign AI” and Digital Twins. Taiwan is moving toward an integrated ecosystem where data-driven governance isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about protecting citizen data while aggressively pursuing carbon neutrality goals. Vice President Hsiao highlighted AI as the primary engine that will drive Taiwan toward its 2050 Net Zero Emissions target.

A Global Blueprint for Urbanization

With record-breaking international participation, Taiwan is positioning itself as more than just a manufacturer; it is a global partner. The hardware and software frameworks being piloted in Taipei—ranging from AI-managed power grids to sustainable infrastructure—are being offered as a scalable roadmap for rapidly urbanizing economies worldwide.

This summit sets a high bar for the tech sector, proving that the products defining the global market for the next decade – like AI-optimized city living, are being built and tested in Taipei right now.
