SHAH ALAM – The government will increase its allocation for rural road projects to RM2.3 billion under Budget 2027, up from RM1.3 billion in 2022, to improve infrastructure in rural areas.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the allocation was part of the RM3.3 billion set aside for basic rural infrastructure, including street lighting, community facilities and access to clean water and electricity.
To improve rural electricity supply, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will install solar-powered streetlights in villages, as well as rooftop solar panels at welfare homes and places of worship.
Electricity supply will also be improved at tahfiz schools, pondok religious institutions and Orang Asli settlements.
Meanwhile, the government has reached a long-term agreement between Perak and Penang through a 40-year Bulk Water Supply Agreement between the two state governments.
The government has also allocated RM2.5 billion to the National Non-Revenue Water (NRW) programme.
The programme will focus on replacing 1,900 kilometres of ageing water pipes nationwide to reduce leaks and improve the country's water supply network.
