LABUAN: The completion of the Brunei bridge spanning 23.3km across the Brunei Bay enhancing the Sultanate’s connectivity with Sabah and Sarawak as well as within Brunei has again raised the question over when the Labuan-Menumbok bridge will materialise.

Activist Lau Seng Kiat said it is now 25 years and there is still no sign of the Labuan bridge except endless statements that is was on the way.

The proposed Labuan bridge is much shorter than the Brunei project and spans between 1.8km to 8.3km, depending on the points chosen here and in Menumbok.

The project was announced under the Labuan Development Plan (1997-2015) and also mentioned in the new Labuan Development Plan 2020 of the Labuan Corporation.

Saying the Labuan project was overdue, Lau added that the relevant ministry should provide an update as many felt that the bridge would be a “game changer”.

The Work Ministry had stated that the ministry had received three bids from interested parties under the Request for Proposal (REP) offered from April 26 to November.

Earlier to this, in September 2021, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim stated in response to a question by Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli that work on the proposed bridge would commence in July this year after going through various stages.
