As time passes, love evolves, society changes, everyone moves away from the old school thinking, the way people perceive love and the range that we now deem as “acceptable” seems to be very wide. People now are starting to accept that age, race, distance and even gender shouldn't be factors deciding if a relationship is right or wrong. As long as there's affection between both, they care for each other, treat each other well and have the same life goals, it's all fine, and that's what really matters. Everyone deserves the freedom to love who they love without being judged for it.
However, the older generation may not agree, or wouldn't be as accommodative and acceptive. According to Oriental Daily, a South Korean woman recently shared her story in a post titled “My 27-Year-Old Daughter Is Dating a 41-Year-Old Man” online, voicing her concerns about her 27 year old daughter, who is currently dating a 41 year old man. She says that they've been dating for about 2 years, and now considering marriage.
On the other hand, the mother strongly disapproves the relationship due to the 14 year age gap, expressing that she couldn't accept the fact and pointed that when the man turned 20, her daughter was still a little girl in elementary school! She explained how disappointed and confused she got, because she felt that she and her husband worked extremely hard to raise their daughter in a loving and happy environment, and yet she fell for someone so much older, as if she had grown up without fatherly love.
She further added that she made several attempts to persuade her daughter not to get into a marriage with this guy who is only a couple of years younger than herself, but nothing seems to change her mind. Therefore, she wanted to seek some advice from netizens, whether she this 14 age year gap is considered normal in today's society, is it just her being “old school” or she should just go with it and respect her daughter's decision.
The post went viral quickly and sparked heated discussion. Responses were on two extremes, where some supported her daughter on the freedom of love, but some felt that it's just too ridiculous. Nevertheless, some netizens did give some logical and proper advice, such as advising her to go with a softer approach, get them to talk and understand her daughter's thoughts, “The more parents oppose, the more determined some people become. Try going with the flow, and casually ask her what she thinks of men her own age. You might gain better insight into what she’s really looking for.”
As a parent, would you be able to accept the fact that your children wants to marry someone with a 14 year age gap? Share your thoughts!
