Phagwara Sub-Division witnessed an extensive crackdown on drug-related offences over the past year, with police registering 273 First Information Reports (FIRs) under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arresting 338 individuals in connection with drug trafficking and consumption cases.

The sustained enforcement drive, carried out across multiple locations in the region, reflects heightened policing efforts aimed at curbing the spread of narcotics and disrupting local supply chains.

According to Phagwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Madhvi Sharma, who shared the details in an interaction with The Tribune, the police intensified surveillance, intelligence gathering and field operations throughout the year, leading to a significant number of arrests and legal actions against offenders involved in drug-related activities. She said that coordinated raids and targeted operations were conducted in suspected hotspots, resulting in repeated seizures and the registration of cases under stringent provisions of the NDPS Act.

SP Madhvi stated that the arrested individuals include both alleged suppliers and consumers, indicating the presence of a wider network operating at different levels of the drug trade. Law enforcement agencies have been focusing on dismantling these networks by tracing backward linkages during investigations, with several cases still under active inquiry to identify suppliers and inter-district connections.

SP Madhvi Sharma further emphasised that the police force remains committed to maintaining pressure on drug peddlers and ensuring strict legal action against those involved in the narcotics trade. She added that preventive policing measures, awareness campaigns and community engagement initiatives are also being strengthened alongside enforcement actions to address the issue from both legal and social perspectives.
