Three Malaysians were arrested by Thai authorities after approximately 87 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu, worth an estimated RM4.3 million, was discovered concealed in their luggage aboard a train travelling from Bangkok to Hat Yai on Tuesday (3 August).
A spokesperson for the Thai police said the suspects were detained at Hat Yai Railway Station during a joint operation involving Hat Yai’s Narcotics Suppression Unit, the Railway Police, Tourist Police, and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board Region 9.
The substances were meant for delivery to Malaysia, with an RM8,000 fee per person
According to the spokesperson, the three men were travelling from Bangkok to Hat Yai when officers intercepted them for inspection upon arrival at the station.
During the search, police uncovered crystal methamphetamine hidden inside three wheeled suitcases and three backpacks carried by the suspects. Investigators believe the narcotics were intended for delivery to a drug trafficking syndicate operating in Malaysia.
Preliminary investigations revealed that each suspect had allegedly been promised RM8,000 for transporting the drugs to a designated destination, according to a Thai portal, Khaosod English.
Authorities are now working to identify the masterminds behind the cross-border trafficking operation, as well as other accomplices believed to be involved in Thailand and abroad.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the syndicate’s network and to trace those responsible for organising the smuggling operation,” the spokesperson said.
Thai authorities have reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation among law enforcement agencies to combat transnational drug trafficking, particularly along routes frequently used by organised criminal syndicates operating between Thailand and neighbouring countries, including Malaysia.
The three suspects are currently being held under Thailand’s narcotics laws while further investigations continue.
