Thai authorities arrested three Malaysians after seizing 87kg of crystal methamphetamine worth about RM4.3 million from their luggage at Hat Yai Station.
PETALING JAYA: Three Malaysians have been arrested by Thai authorities after 87kg of crystal methamphetamine, estimated to be worth about RM4.3 million, was found in their luggage while they were travelling by train from Bangkok to Hat Yai.
According to Berita RTM, the three suspects were detained at Hat Yai Station during a joint operation involving the Hat Yai Narcotics Prevention Unit, the State Railway of Thailand Police, Thai Tourist Police and the Narcotics Control Board Region 9 office.
A Thai police spokesperson said the suspects were travelling from Bangkok to Hat Yai before they were stopped and inspected upon arrival at the station.
“Checks found crystal methamphetamine hidden inside three wheeled luggage bags and three backpacks,” the spokesperson said.
Initial investigations found that the drugs were believed to have been intended for delivery to a drug trafficking syndicate in Malaysia.
The spokesperson said the suspects claimed they had been offered RM8,000 each to transport the drugs to a designated location.
“Investigations are ongoing to identify the masterminds and accomplices involved in the cross-border drug trafficking syndicate, whether in Thailand or abroad,” the spokesperson said.
The three suspects are currently being investigated under Thailand’s drug-related laws.
