Three undertrial inmates allegedly attempted to escape from the Central Jail, Patiala, during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, but were apprehended by jail security personnel within a couple of hours.
According to information available, the inmates — Rahul Kumar, Vikram Singh and Karandeep Singh — reportedly used blankets to make improvised ropes after cutting them into strips. They allegedly scaled the jail walls and entered the Jail Training School premises adjoining the prison complex.
However, a vigilant night guard spotted the movement and immediately raised an alarm. Acting swiftly, jail guards launched a search operation and managed to nab all three inmates after the escape attempt.
Sources said they were lodged in the jail in connection with theft cases.
Jail Superintendent Gurcharan Singh Dhaliwal informed the local police about the incident.
This correspondent tried to contact the jail superintendent for an official statement but he didn’t respond to the calls.
The Tripuri police station SHO Sukhwinder Singh Gill confirmed that an investigation was underway and a criminal case would be registered against the inmates for attempting to escape from custody.
