3 weather systems affecting PH

MANILA, Philippines – Three weather systems – the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), frontal system and localized thunderstorms – would be affecting the country over the next 24 hours, the national weather agency said on Monday.

Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), meanwhile, said that the low pressure area (formerly Tropical Storm ‘Caloy), which lingered for more than a week inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility has dissipated.

She said in a 5 a.m. briefing that Batanes and Babuyan Islands would likely have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the frontal system.

Pagasa said a frontal system or surface is defined as a “transition-boundary separating two air masses of contrasting properties (temperature and humidity).”

Simply put, fronts form when one kind of air mass enters an area occupied by another kind of air mass,” according to the state-run weather agency.

It said that Zamboanga Peninsula, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi would likely have overcast skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to ITCZ - an imaginary line where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.

On one hand, Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the Pagasa forecaster said, would be experiencing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms owing to the effect of the localized thunderstorms in 24 hours.
