
SANDAKAN: Some 300 tonnes of waste have been collected from Kampung Sim-Sim, utilising funds from the Sandakan Parliamentary allocation. This initiative aims to clean up the area, which is a popular tourist attraction.
Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee expressed hope that the effort would continue to receive support from all parties, including local residents, to maintain the village’s cleanliness.

Read more The carnival was officiated by the Sandakan United Chinese Community Association Deputy Chairman Wong Kin Yan, representing its Chairman Datuk Edward Khoo.
Also in attendance were Sandakan Deputy Police Chief Supt Ramasamy Kuppan, Programme Chairperson Tang Szu Ching and the Sabah Dynamic Hope Association Chairman Chin Yee Kent.

On the carnival, Vivian said it was held to enliven the festive atmosphere in the country, alongside other celebrations such as Hari Raya carnivals and others organised through similar collaborations.

He mentioned that the association has been organising the annual Chinese New Year Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival in Sandakan for over 50 years, in addition to food festivals showcasing traditional culinary heritage.
Khoo also said that the carnival brings back nostalgic memories of Sandakan’s Jalan Satu, once bustling with Chinese New Year preparations in the past.
The Year of the Snake symbolises good fortune and transformation, inspiring resilience in facing challenges and embracing future opportunities, he said.
“It is also about coming together, regardless of our origins, to share in the joy and spirit of renewal. It strengthens the bonds that connect us and fosters a sense of belonging,” he said.
He emphasised that every celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of family, friendship and collective efforts to create a brighter future for all.
Meanwhile, Tang said that 88 booths were set up this year and expressed hope for greater participation from entrepreneurs in the programme next year.
