PENAMPANG: A 31-year-old was killed early Thursday when his vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided with a four-wheel drive (4WD) along Jalan Papar Lama, near the rear gate of Kem Lok Kawi.
District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton confirmed the 5.15am tragedy.
“Initial investigations indicate the car was travelling from Penampang towards Papar when the driver lost control and swerved into the opposite lane, crashing into a 4WD coming from the Kinarut direction,” he said.
The impact killed the car driver at the scene, while two male passengers in their 30s sustained injuries and were rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for treatment. Two of seven individuals in the 4WD, all aged around 14, were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving resulting in death.
Sammy urged the public, especially parents and guardians, to be vigilant in monitoring the movements of underage individuals to prevent them from driving without a licence.
“This is crucial to avoid tragic incidents,” he said.
Anyone with information related to the accident is urged to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Penampang District Police Headquarters or reach out directly to Investigating Officer Inspector Saparia Ladoni at 019-8095133.
