35% of Pinoys cannot name impeach charge

THE alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds was the most widely identified impeachment charge against Vice President Sara Duterte, but more than one-third of Filipino adults could not name any of the allegations against her, a National Momentum Survey released Tuesday showed.

The non-commissioned survey found that 38.7 percent of 1,487 Filipino adults interviewed identified the alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds as an impeachment charge against Duterte.

However, 35.3 percent said they could not identify any of the charges.

The survey was conducted from Aug. 18 to 23 through face-to-face interviews, while the prosecution was presenting evidence and witnesses on Article I of the impeachment complaint, which involves the alleged misuse of confidential funds.

Awareness of the other charges was considerably lower, with 14.6 percent identifying grave threats, 13.3 percent alleged bribery involving Department of Education personnel, and 6.7 percent unexplained wealth.

The survey also asked respondents whether they considered the charges credible.

The confidential-fund allegation again ranked highest, with 28.2 percent saying they found it credible. This was followed by grave threats at 15.5 percent, unexplained wealth at 12.1 percent and bribery at 7.7 percent.

Meanwhile, 20.5 percent said none of the charges were credible, while 12 percent were unsure and 4 percent declined to answer.

The strongest regional divide emerged in Mindanao, where 34.7 percent of respondents said none of the impeachment charges were credible.

This was higher than the corresponding figures in Metro Manila at 23.7 percent, the rest of Luzon at 15.6 percent and the Visayas at 12.7 percent.

Mindanao also recorded the lowest share of respondents who considered the confidential-fund allegation credible, at 13.5 percent.

The figure was higher in Metro Manila at 34 percent, the rest of Luzon at 33.2 percent and the Visayas at 30 percent.

Awareness of the confidential fund charge was highest in Metro Manila at 44.6 percent, followed by Mindanao at 40.2 percent, the rest of Luzon at 38.8 percent and the Visayas at 32.5 percent.

Gen Z respondents had the highest awareness of the confidential fund allegation at 43.4 percent, followed by millennials at 38.2 percent, Baby Boomers at 36.4 percent and Gen X at 33.9 percent.

Gen Z respondents were also the most likely to consider the confidential fund allegation credible, at 33.8 percent, followed by Gen X at 30.7 percent, Baby Boomers, 23.7 percent and millennials, 23.2 percent.

The survey had a national margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.

Its subnational margins of error were plus or minus 6.9 percentage points for Metro Manila, 3.8 percentage points for the rest of Luzon, 5.8 percentage points for the Visayas and 5.5 percentage points for Mindanao.
