MANILA, Philippines — Four standout players from Ateneo de Davao University—Macky Pelegrino, JM Sanoria, Matt Cayateno, and Rhysus Bajenting—are set to continue their basketball journey with De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, as confirmed by head coach Jess Evangelio.
The quartet played a pivotal role in Davao’s historic gold medal run in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Norte. They had initially committed to Ateneo before a series of unfortunate events, including the tragic deaths of teammates Rene Baterbonia, 18, and Divine Adili, 21.
“It is with great pride and gratitude that I finally confirm that our boys will be joining La Salle Zobel as they begin an exciting new chapter in their basketball and academic journey,” Evangelio shared on Facebook.
He also expressed appreciation to La Salle Zobel for welcoming the players and supporting their growth beyond the court.
“We are truly thankful to La Salle Zobel for opening its doors and providing them with the opportunity to grow not only as athletes, but also as students and young men of character,” he added.
Evangelio emphasized that the players remain committed to upholding discipline, humility, and integrity as they represent the Lasallian community.
Pelegrino, Sanoria, Cayateno, and Bajenting—alongside the late Baterbonia—were instrumental in delivering Davao’s Palarong Pambansa title, marking a defining chapter in their young careers.
