Four people were killed and four injured as a four-wheeler they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a gorge in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Thursday, officials said.

The accident occurred between 4 pm and 5 pm on the Dewal-Ghes motor road in the Dewal development block.

Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer Nand Kishore Joshi said the vehicle, a Mahindra Bolero, carrying eight passengers, was on its way back to Ghes village when the driver lost control over the vehicle.

The vehicle rolled down the slope and fell into a river.

Police and administration teams launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving information.

All four injured individuals have been rescued from the site and are being taken to the government hospital in Dewal, Joshi said. The identities of the deceased people have not been confirmed yet, he added.
