Kota Kinabalu: Police arrested three local men and seized 41.6kg of syabu worth an estimated RM1.32 million in two separate raids in Ranau and Telupid last Thursday (Aug 28).

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the first raid at 8.15am at a petrol station in Kampung Kilimu, Ranau, led to the arrest of a 31-year-old.

“Inspection of a vehicle revealed 20 orange plastic packets of Chinese tea branded Alishan Xin Juan Tea, suspected to contain syabu weighing 21.3kg, worth about RM681,000,” he told a press conference at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK Sabah), here, Tuesday.

Another police team intercepted a second vehicle at the compound of Telupid Mosque at 9.20am, resulting in the arrest of two men aged between 21 and 24.

“The inspection revealed they were carrying 20 packets of Chinese tea containing syabu weighing 20.33kg, valued at around RM650,000,” Jauteh said.

He said the total seizure could supply 160,000 addicts for single use.

Preliminary investigations revealed that all three suspects acted as runners for a drug syndicate, transporting the consignment from Kota Kinabalu to the east coast districts of Tawau and Semporna, with payment of RM1,000 per kg.

“We believe the drugs were brought in from Peninsular Malaysia by air before being moved to Kota Kinabalu for distribution in Sabah,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment on conviction.

In a separate case, a Suluk man was arrested in Kunak on Aug 14, leading to the seizure of RM2.18 million worth of assets.

The confiscated items included RM354,540 in cash, 16 cars, a lorry, two motorcycles, Rolex watches, gold jewellery, designer handbags and other luxury goods.

Jauteh said the suspect was a repeat offender who had previously been detained at PPA Simpang Renggam from 2016 to 2018 under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.

“He was actively distributing drugs around Kota Kinabalu and the east coast,” he said, noting that this was the biggest asset seizure so far this year.

To date, 33 dealers have been arrested under the Act in Sabah.

“Drugs are the nation’s No. 1 enemy and police will not compromise it,” Jauteh said. He urged the public to provide information via the Narcotics CID hotline at 012-2087222.
