The Sonepat police have arrested 58 persons involved in the illegal supply of weapons during a special campaign conducted over the past 15 days to curb the crime rate in the district.

During the campaign, the police seized a total of 46 country-made pistols, one revolver, two magazines, and 102 live cartridges.

Following the directions of Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal, a special campaign against illegal weapons and those involved in arms smuggling was carried out in the district from June 1 to 15, said Mamta Singh, ADGP and Commissioner of Police (CP), Sonepat.

During the campaign, police teams took effective action against individuals possessing illegal weapons and those involved in arms smuggling, resulting in the arrest of 58 accused persons over the last 15 days, she said.

The primary objective of the campaign was to curb crime in the district, restrain the activities of anti-social elements, and strengthen the sense of security among the general public, the CP added.

As part of the campaign, extensive checking was carried out on a large scale by all police stations, crime investigation units, and special teams. The operations were conducted based on intelligence inputs and surveillance of suspicious individuals.

The Sonepat police are following a zero-tolerance policy towards crime, criminal elements, and the possession of illegal weapons.

Issuing a warning to offenders, the CP said that individuals involved in possessing, buying, selling, smuggling, or using illegal weapons in any crime would not be spared and would face strict legal action.

Narender Kadyan, DCP, Crime, said that 47 cases were registered at various police stations across the district during the 15-day campaign, and 58 accused persons were arrested.

The police seized 46 country-made pistols, one revolver, two magazines, and 102 live cartridges from the possession of the accused, he said.

Theseized weapons have been taken into police custody, and an investigation has been initiated to determine whether they were used, or intended to be used, in any criminal activities, the DCP said.

The investigation further revealed that 14 of the arrested accused had previous criminal records. Cases of murder, attempted murder, loot, robbery, snatching, and violations of the Arms Act had been registered against them at various police stations, Kadyan said.

The Sonepat police are maintaining close surveillance on such habitual and active offenders, he added.
