
The Ludhiana police claimed to have arrested a student of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, alongwith his aide and recovered illegal weapons from their possession.
The arrested accused were identified as Abhishek Kumar alias Kala resident of Sundar Nagar chowk, Mundian Kalan, Ludhiana, and Arun Kumar alias Bullet of Maha Singh Nagar Daba.
Abhishek is a BA final year student at LPU Phagwara and Arun is Class 10 pass and currently working in some private hospital lab. Arun is brother of Abhishek’s brother-in-law.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Crime Harpal Singh, Additional DCP Crime Amandeep Singh Brar, ACP Crime Harshpreet Singh, CIA incharge inspector Avtar Singh issued a joint statement in this regard.
A police official said under the special campaign being run by the Punjab Government and the Police Department against gangsters and illegal arms holders, the police party of CIA Staff Ludhiana has succeeded in arresting two persons and recovering one pistol .32 bore along with two live rounds and one pistol .315 bore along with two live rounds from them.
The police had received a tip off that Abhishek and Arun are in possession of illegal weapons and are in the area of Police Station Jamalpur to commit a crime. Taking immediate action, a case under Section 25/54/59 Arms Act was registered.
The police party conducted a raid in Mundian Kalan and the accused were arrested.
During the interrogation, the accused said that they had enmity with another party, due to which they had kept the said illegal weapons. The accused were produced in the court and two-day police remand was obtained. Further, an in-depth interrogation will be conducted and the source of the recovered weapons will be investigated.
CIA incharge Inspector Avtar Singh said that Abhishek had bought the weapon from some Ludhiana-based supplier, and raids were being conducted to nab him.
“The accused reportedly bought the weapons for Rs 40,000. Also, once the supplier is held, the police will be able to bust the entire supply chain of weapon smuggling as well."
Notably, possession of illegal weapon with a university student raises serious concerns about the accessibility of illegal arms.
