Kota Kinabalu: A total of 58 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed across five villages in the Darau state constituency as part of Phase Two of a community-wide safety initiative spearheaded by Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat).

The initiative, implemented in June, was driven by Gagasan Rakyat Darau Division Chief Datuk Mohamed Razali Razi, who said the goal was to bolster security and improve the well-being of local residents.

“We are committed to protecting our community from crime and unwanted incidents. This is a proactive step to ensure a safer and more resilient environment,” Razali said.

Razali said future phases will see further expansion of surveillance coverage, including in Kampung Bangka-Bangka, Kampung Kembirian and additional areas within Kalansanan, as well as schools in the Darau constituency.

“We are not only focusing on high-risk areas, but also on educational premises to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

“CCTVs have proven effective in deterring crime. Their presence gives residents peace of mind and contributes to a more secure atmosphere,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of community involvement in the maintenance and success of the system.

“Security and development aren’t solely the Government’s responsibility. Active citizen participation is essential. If we work together, Darau can be a model for safe and progressive communities in Sabah,” he added.

The Phase Two installation was carried out with the support of village leaders and Gagasan Rakyat grassroots members, led by Kampung Cenderamata 1 Likas Branch Chief Mohamad Suffian Saprin.

The first phase, completed in February, covered 24 crime hotspots in Likas, also aimed at enhancing public safety.
