Sandwiched between Tin Hau and North Point, Fortress Hill is often an overlooked neighbourhood. But here, you’ll find everything from a handful of eateries to an Insta-worthy seaside promenade and of course, cosy cafes. And from experience, we found cafe-hopping in Fortress Hill to be a pleasant experience. No jarringly loud pop music or overwhelming crowds. Just quality coffee, and some at unbeatable prices too. So, if you’re looking to explore the road less travelled (so to speak), look to these cafes in Fortress Hill for your next respite.

Fortress Hill is a great work-friendly haven for digital nomads. It offers a solid mix of cafes for any mood. Coffeelin is a standout choice. It has flexible indoor seating and a charming garden patio. Another reliable spot is Pause It, which serves excellent coffee and bites at reasonable prices. Plus, the space is comfortable for focused work. Need a quick, quality caffeine fix? Try a top-tier takeaway from Smoko or Uncle Ben Coffee. And to maximise your visit, try this perfect little route. Grab your drink and a snack and head towards the East Coast Precinct. It’ll take you about ten minutes on foot from the main cafe area. Here, you’ll find plenty of benches, a great spot to lounge with a book or enjoy a stunning sunset. Not to mention, you’ll spot doggos of all kinds, enjoying their daily stroll.

And speaking of pets, several Fortress Hill cafes offer pet-friendly seating, though options are more limited than neighbourhoods like Sheung Wan. The neighbourhood’s compact size is a major advantage, making it incredibly easy to navigate its streets and even hop between cafes to sample different brews throughout the day.

Once you’ve explored cafes in Fortress Hill, consider continuing your caffeine hunt in the vibrant cafe scene of Wan Chai.

Pause It

Pause It has a total of four locations in Hong Kong thus far, with Mong Kok and Fortress Hill being the more popular ones. And let us tell you, it is indeed quite a rare find. For one, it closes pretty late at 10 pm, and two, the quality and quantity will leave you satisfied. And finally, the affordable price makes all the difference. The Fortress Hill location is quite popular amongst the office goers in the area for lunch (so we recommend you drop by 2:30 pm to get seats faster). It’s a wonderful option for brunch, serving Egg’s Benedict, All Day Breakfast, and Housemade USA Angus Beef Burger. Don’t sleep on the pastas and the grilled meats. And this is possibly one of the longest menus for drinks offerings, from classic coffee to a pot of tea, speciality drinks, and even cocktails.

Coffeelin

Coffeelin has come a long way since first opening in Sai Ying Pun, now boasting branches across the Island in Central, Wan Chai, and our favourite: Fortress Hill. We love this branch for its airy feel, flooded with natural light, comfortable plush seating, and a quaint outdoor nook. The menu is a complete treat. It’s rare to find a cafe where the coffee, though excellent, is rivalled by other drinks. Coffeelin’s specialty tea blends, Matcha, Cold Brew Tea Tonic, and Hot Chocolate are truly standouts. The food menu doesn’t disappoint, offering a range from hearty pasta and healthy salads to light sandwiches and decadent cakes, all presented impeccably. It’s the ideal cosy yet energising environment to get some work done.
