KUCHING (May 29): An 80-year-old man lost RM103,850 after falling victim to an online investment scam that began in August last year.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim had been communicating with a woman via WhatsApp who claimed to be running a business in Pattaya, Thailand.

The suspect allegedly offered the victim an opportunity to become her business partner in a “Wholesale International Business Online” investment scheme through a website managed by her.

“Interested in the offer, the victim was then ordered to make several payment transactions, purportedly as a form of investment, and that the money alongside the profits are to be banked into the victim’s account.

“From September 2025 up to February this year, the victim made a total of eight transactions to six different accounts, totalling RM103,850,” he said.

Alexson said the victim realised he had been scammed after failing to contact the suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

He advised the public not to trust investment offers made through social media platforms and to verify the legitimacy of companies and websites through Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC).

The public can check unauthorised investment schemes through Bank Negara Malaysia or Securities Commission Malaysia Investment Checker.

Victims of cybercrime scams are also urged to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997.

Alexson added that checks on suspicious phone numbers and bank accounts could be conducted through the Semak Mule portal or the Check Scammers CCID application before carrying out financial transactions.

He also encouraged the public to follow the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s official social media accounts for the latest scam alerts and modus operandi updates.
