An elderly woman in Penang was tragically killed after she fell onto the ground and was run over by a car which immediately fled the scene.
The victim was identified as 81-year-old Li Yayi (transliteration), who died at the Desa Green flats parking area in Solok Slim yesterday (Sept 8).
What CCTV footage showed
According to CCTV footage, it showed Li alighting from an e-hailing vehicle when she lost her footing and stumbled onto the ground.
As she was getting back onto her feet, another car appeared in the frame and proceeded to run her over before leaving the scene.
Two onlookers who were waiting at the lobby area quickly rushed over to render assistance but it proved to be too late as Li later succumbed to her injuries.
Li’s son, who spoke to reporters about the tragedy, expressed anger towards the car that ran over his mother.
The driver did not get out to check on her after the accident. Instead, the driver sped up and left the scene. It is infuriating.
“My mother lost a lot of blood, and there was blood all over the place,” he said.
Li’s son added that the CCTV camera did not manage to capture the car’s registration number as it was located some distance away from the scene.
Police investigating
Meanwhile, Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad confirmed the incident and said police received information about it at 3.50pm.
He added Li was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.48pm due to severe head injuries.
The case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and those with information are urged contact investigating officer Inspector Irwandy Hamled at 013-5155656.
