Businesses affected by the Covid-19 pandemic will be granted up to 50% discounts for electricity bills, depending on their usage rate. This initiative, which will begin on 1 April 2020, was announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during the reveal of the PRIHATIN Economic Stimulus Package.

The discounts will granted in tiers, with higher discounts given for the lower usage tiers. The tiered discounts will last for a period of six months, and will be offered as follows:

  • 50% discount for electricity use less than 200kW
  • 25% discount for electricity use between 201kW to 300kW
  • 15% discount for electricity use between 301kW to 600kW

According to Tan Sri Muhyiddin, this initiative is a joint effort between the Government and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and will see the allocation of an additional RM530 million to this measure.

Prior to this, the government had already announced a flat 15% discount on electricity bills for the affected business categories. They include hotels, travel agencies, airlines, shopping malls, and convention and exhibition centres. This initial measure was granted as part of the first Economic Stimulus Package 2020, with an estimated total cost of RM500 million.

Meanwhile, all other users in the commercial, industrial, and agriculture categories, as well as domestic users, will continue enjoying a 2% discount on their electricity bills for a period of six months. This had been announced earlier, in the middle of March 2020.
