Former Liverpool defender Glen Hysen has never regretted turning down Manchester United.

Hysen joined Liverpool from Fiorentina in 1989, with the First Division title with the Reds.

But when negotiations over a £300,000 transfer stalled, manager Alex Ferguson flew out to Florence with Old Trafford chairman Martin Edwards to attempt to conclude matters in person but the pair were told by Hysen's agent that his client had signed for Liverpool a few days previously.

Hysen told the Mirror: “I turned down a move to Manchester United twice.

“The first time they spoke to me was after the 1987 UEFA Cup final with Gothenburg when we won against Dundee United and I was approached by Alex Ferguson and Martin Edwards.

“The second time was when I was with Fiorentina in Italy. They were very interested. Something went wrong but I said no to them twice.

“Of course this was not the Manchester United of the David Beckham and Ryan Giggs era.

“Had they offered at that time I might have said yes!"
