Most people are extra concerned about hygiene ever since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides us putting our masks and sanitising our hands, we also expect the premises we visit to be hygienic.

While most establishments have been trying their best to maintain extra hygiene, apparently the memo didn’t reach this tempeh factory in Batu Caves IKS Industrial Zone.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) shared on their Facebook of how they were forced to close down this factory after receiving complaints from the public.

In the raid that was conducted on the 21st July, the authorities were unsatisfied with how the establishment was being handled. Besides being unclean, they also found raw materials and food preparation items on the floor.

The floor was wet and dirty with food remains strewn everywhere. The walls of the factory were also stained with a black mould infestation.

Even more worrying is that the food handlers, around four of them, did not receive their typhoid injections and weren’t even wearing proper hairnets, aprons and shoes when they handled the products.

The officers could see that the equipment used were old and dirty. Used paint cans were being used to store the food and dirty table cloths were not replaced.

To no one’s surprise, the Premises Closing Order under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 effective 21st July 2020 was issued. This isn’t the first case of a factory being shut down due to poor hygiene.

On 15th June, a tofu processing factory in Cheras was found to be dirty, stinky and infested with cockroaches. The premises were then ordered to be closed for 14 days.

If you’ve encountered any restaurant or factory with suspicious hygiene levels, you can call DBKL at 1 800 88 3255 or you can even submit a complaint here!
